Lesson #28 - Wait Until AFTER The Baby Is Born To Purchase Everything

Once the man and I found out we were having a LITTLE GIRL - all bets were off!! I went out and started buying the cutest little outfits I could find...and there are a TON to choose from! Well, I bought said outfits in size 0-3 month - because that is what "normal" children wear after being born...or so I thought.

I really wish that someone would have said - hey, dumb ass, you might want to wait to see what size your bugger will be and wait until AFTER she is born before going nuts-o with the clothes. If you hadn't guessed - no one said that to me...and I just kept right on buying. Not only that, but we also got some super cute clothes at both of the showers we had...YAY for free clothes (and diapers, and wipes, and furniture, and toys, and...well, you get the idea)!

The babe's birthday was upon us me...FINALLY I would get to dress her in all of those cute adorable (I hate this word...sounds like A Door Bell) friggin fabulous little clothes! I packed her a little "going-home" bag that had my top favorites in the outfit department.

The babe was born and as she was being cleaned up, the man said she looked much smaller than the clothes we bought for her. My ob/gyn opened up betting on how much she weighted before the nurse put her on the scale. We all weighed in (no pun intended) and anxiously watched the scale. Turns out the man was right, on, point...6 pounds, 9 ounces on the nose.

Well, my friends...I'm not sure if you've guessed this yet or not, but the babe was WAY too small for all of those cute clothes. She was forced to wear sport that cute silly awful long-sleeved white shirt with her diaper just hanging out. I couldn't help but think what a terrible mother I was - and the babe was just born! I couldn't even provide her with the fabulously cute clothes that would help her stand out amongst a nursery of lemmings. Whoa was me!!

So, I will definitely be prepared with the next babe. Not sure when that time will come...but I will be ready, darn it! I am going to buy the most fabulous cute little outfit in premie, newborn, 0-3 months...and pray beg plead hope that the next one isn't any bigger than a 3 month old!!

Better than the clothes being too small. She could at least grow into them.

Funny thing my second daughter was 6lbs 9oz. :)

My daughter was 6 pounds when she was born (my son was 8 so I was expecting bigger). I had a ton of cute going home outfits for her and she ended up in a "blah" sleeper...the only thing that even came close to fitting her. Hubby ran to the store when we got home for some preemie cloths (she wasn't a preemie) and now those clothes fit her Cabbage Patch Doll.

This is funny because I anticipated your saying just the opposite at the end of this post. I've had 2 babies in the 8 lb range and I only keep a few 0 to 3 mths clothes on hand for new baby and usually exchange anything newborn for up sizes. I liked having a summer baby because we mostly put her in onesies and sundresses, but it was trickier for a Dec baby!

I got to agree, much better than too big. My last 3 were all close to 9 lbs and those 0-3 month clothes fit for like a week. :( I was so sad.

My 9 month old was the biggest at 8 lbs 15 1/2 oz and he is now a whopping 23 1/2 lbs. He's in 18 month clothes already. It's so not right.

I can say I got to enjoy itty bitty clothes with my oldest, he was 6 lbs when he came into this world, not giant babies like the other 3. LOL

Swinging by from SITS!

That size was too big for my boys, too. Though my older two outgrew newborn clothes in two weeks! And then 0-3 month clothes in a month.

The peanut, thankfully, grew at a more normal rate.

Perfect timing for this lesson as I have just started online browsing for a coming home outfit. Will definitely purchase in multiple sizes. Thanks for sharing this!

too funny, but seriously, I was told they get bigger each time. Mine were no exception. Well the third if he had not been yanked a little earlier than he was supposed to would have beat out his brother by at least a pound.

I did the very same thing, only I was pg with twin girls. And they were born at 34 weeks. Which meant they were preemies, weighing in around 4 lbs each. We needed preemie clothes, of which I had ZERO. Fortunately the NICU let us borrow a bunch since they had to stay there for a few weeks anyway!

I agree with Mindy...I thought you were going to say that she was huge. At least she was able to grow into the clothes!

LOL You weren't a "terrible mother" at all! You were a prepared mother! A mother that thought ahead. But...you know what they say, "Life is what happens when we have other plans," and boy isn't that the truth? ;)

I am VERY sure that she was JUST as adorable with her diaper hanging out! I loved this post! It made me chuckle thinking about when my oldest son was born. Hey...I was SURE he was going to be a girl. I didn't even REALLY have a boy's name picked out that I was very settled on. I was that sure.

But he turned out lovely, precious, and wonderful, and he didn't care that his clothes were yellow and aqua (hey at least they weren't pink...at my mom's urging). He turned into a wonderful young man, no worse the wear, for the experience.

Thanks for posting this. Nice memories for me too. :)

LOL - I definitely get this.. ALSO, I bought all of this stuff I never ended up using - things like wipe warmers and accessories that seemed like great ideas but that I never really used.

Thanks for popping by my blog earlier! I'm going to follow your blog as well! :)

I totally thought you were going to say she was too big - but it was the opposite! At least she could go into those cute little outfits, right?! :)

I like the rest of these comments thought you were going to say that she was big, too! Hey, at least she'll grow into the clothes. Mine on the ohter hand were in them for like a day!

LOL, I thought she was going to be too big! At least she has room to grow in them :o)

We had such problems with finding clothes small enough to fit Lucy. She was a little over 6 pounds and ending up fitting nicely into premie clothes. NB size could have wrapped around her twice! They looked so goofy. GIJoe and I were both over 8 pounds when we were born so we expected to have to skip the NB and go straight for 0-3 months. We were shocked by the eency-weency thing that came out of me.

Love your blog! Its so cute. I'm following now!

We were the opposite! My kids came home too big for those 0-3 clothes. Well not all of them, but the 2nd and 3rd didn't last in them for more than like 2 weeks!

My first (who was always true to size) puked all over his going home outfit so we were SOOL anyway!

Oh well, you live and you learn right. We should have been friends sooner. I'd have told you straight out! I have problems that way. ENJOY!

I had the same problem with my daughter. Her clothes were pretty big on her.

Don't be so hard on yourself. I really think all moms do exactly like you did...overshop before the baby is born.

How can you not? I swear some of that clothing called me out by name.

At least your baby girl has some great things to grow into!

Who can resist adorable baby clothes?!!! At they were big enough for her to grow into. :-) Have a good weekend...

I had the exact opposite problem - with a nine and a half pounder he never wore any of the cute little things I'd washed before he came home!

I am a fan of just waiting til the baby is born to buy anything for them

Tracie said... 25

I had the opposite problem. My oldest was 9 1/2 lbs and 23 inches long when he was born. He burst right out of the 0-3 month stuff very quickly.
